What are some consequences of global warming
Rise in sea levels, change in rainfall and temp which affects where certain food can be grown, more severe storms, higher rate of extinction
What is a carbon footprint
The measure of the amount of CO2 released over the lifetime of the product / event / service
Why are carbon footprints hard to calculate?
You would need to know the CO2 released in all parts of making it , using it , and disposing of it
What ways are there to reduce carbon footprint?
Use renewavle energy instead of fossil fuels
Use efficient processes to reduce energy and waste
Capture CO2 before enters the atmosphere and trap it underground
Why not reduce carbon footprints?
Renewabke energys and other tech still needs work
People dont want to change lifestyles
Difficult to get international agreement
What is complete combustion?
A fuel is burnt with enough oxygen to produce only water and CO2
When are carbon monoxide and and particulates produced by combustion?
When incomplete combustion occurs ( when not enough oxygen is present )
Why is carbon monoxide dangerous?
Binds to haemoglobin in red blood cells instead of O2. This causes lack of oxygen resulting in fainting, coma or death.
Why is it dificult to detext carbon monoxide?
Colourless and odorless
What produces sulfur dioxide?
Combustion of fossil fuels containing sulphur impurities
Why is sulphur dioxide bad for the environment?
Reacts with water in the clouds to produce dilute sulphuric acid which causes acid rain. Also causes respiratory problems
What produces nitrogen oxides?
Nitrogen and O2 reacting at high temps ( like combustion in car engine )
Why is nitrogen oxides bad for the environment?
Causes acid rain
Respiratory problems
What damage can acid rain do?
Kills plants and wildlife, damages buildings and statues, corrodes metal
What do particulates cause for the environment
Global dimming
Respiratory issues
