Last revision questions Flashcards
What is the Richter Scale? Describe this in detail (in particular how much stronger an earthquake is at each level).
To measure the magnitude of earthquakes of moderate size (that is, magnitude 3 to magnitude 7)
What is a seismograph?
The seismograph is a device to measure the movement of the earth, the force and duration.
What is a primary wave?
Can travel through fluids and solids, transfer their energy through compression and are the fastest wave.
What is a secondary wave?
Can only travel through solids, larger amplitude, Secondary waves are slower than Primary waves.
What is a surface wave?
Slower and most powerful because of higher amplitude, can travel longitudinal or transverse.
Describe a divergent plate boundary and what are some common features of this type of boundary?
Two tectonic plates moving away from one another Causes: mid-ocean ridge, rift valleys
Describe a convergent plate boundary, the different types and what are some common features of this type of boundary?
Two tectonic plates have collided with each other, one has gone below the other and has sub-ducted under into the mantle.
Continental VS Continental
Continental VS Oceanic
Oceanic VS Oceanic
Describe a transform fault plate boundary and what are some common features of this type of boundary?
Two tectonic plates trying to push two different ways against each other (sliding against each other). The most dangerous tectonic plate boundary.
Describe the ‘Plate Tectonic Theory’ and state at least two types of evidence to support Wegener’s original theory.
Plate tectonics is the theory that Earth’s outer shell is divided into several plates that glide over the mantle, the rocky inner layer above the core. Evidence; Age of the floor, continents fit like jigsaw puzzles
