Why does the bracero program start?
the need to increase production of agricultural goods, but agricultural workers are enlisting in WW2 they are now lacking workers
What are the agreements that the US and Mexico governments come to?
- Allow mexicans to legally enter into and work in the country in designated areas to work in agriculture
- bracero program will not depress wages
- not take job of americans
- Texas will not participate due to being so close to the boarder (already having problems with migration)
- All other southwestern states will participate

What was a major problem for the braceros?
The US government would take social security out of their paychecks, but because the braceros were not retiring in the US, they wanted their money back
What was the process that the braceros had to go through to get their money back?
hire an attorney to contact the US government and request the money, US claims they sent it to MX, MX claims they don’t have it, US sends proof that they sent the money to MX, MX demands braceros bring pay stubs to reimbursed. by now the process has been going on for decades
What did the MX government finally do?
they set aside 26.6 million dollars to divide among the braceros, but could only go to the braceros not their families
How many braceros were actually accepted and reimbursed?
80,000
