Laser Speed Detector Flashcards
Measurement of distance
The laser beam extends outwards for an indefinite distance unless it is reflected or refracted
Site selection
Consider; the Cosine effect, having a clear line of sight, weather conditions, whether the operation is from inside the vehicle, movement of the unit
Cosine effect-when operating a laser how can the Cosine effect be minimised?
Correct sighting of the laser minimises the Cosine effect
Clear line of sight
There must be a clear line of sight to the target vehicle
Weather conditions-the traffic laser should not be used in certain weather conditions, name these?
Traffic laser is not to be used in fog, snow or heavy rain
Other factors-when selecting a site for operating a traffic laser what factors should be taken into consideration?
Sweep effect, reflection influences, night operation and headlights
Traffic laser
The traffic laser can be used only as a stationary device
Tracking history
Must be established using; visual estimation of speed, audio tone confirmation, comparison of the digital readout with the operators estimate of speed
Principles of laser energy-what sort of beam does a laser use?
A laser is a concentration of light energy into a high intensity narrow beam
What happens to the range of the laser is used through the windscreen of a patrol vehicle?
Can affect the maximum range and can reduce the effective range of the traffic laser. Use the traffic laser outside the vehicle through an open window
What does using the laser through the windscreen of a patrol vehicle have on the accuracy of the units speed reading?
The range is affected however the accuracy of the speed trading is not.
Sweep effect-where on a target vehicle should the laser be aimed?
Between the headlights at the number plate (registration) area is ideal
Sources of interference-what effect do power line shave on laser units?
Power lines do not have any effect on laser speed devices
