Laser Flashcards
Fire triangle
Ignition source/heat
Fuel
Oxidizer
True or false you can lay laser on sterile field?
False. Always put back in holster when not in use
Never lay in drapes/gauze/sponge
How to prevent chemical burns?
Commonly occur after skin prep
- prevent pooling of prep, placing towels to catch fluid and then remove
- ensure prep solution dries before draping
What does LASER stand for?
Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation
What is a laser?
Non ionizing radiation
- does not remove electrons from atoms/molecules
Classified by their level of energy and accessibility of the beam during use
Ex. 3b, 4 common in surgery
Laser safety hazards?
Eye injures Tissue burns Inhalation Fire hazards Inadvertent beam exposure Electrical hazard
Beam vs non beam hazards of laser use?
Beam: immediate acute injuries from direct, indirect or scattered
- eye injury, burns
Non beam: smoke/pume inhalation, fire, electrical
What is a nominal hazard zone?
Is the operating or procedure room where the laser is being used
Eye and skin precautions must be enforced
- patient and surgical team
What patients need to wear eye protection for laser sx?
Awake
General anesthesia
Eye protection from lasers?
Needs to be applicable to the specific wavelength and optical density of laser being used
Laser safety precautions outside OR?
Warning signs for type of laser being used
Protective eye wear at entrances
Keep doors closed and windows covered
Laser safety in OR?
Test equipment Use as per manufactures instructions Time out Safety checklist Keep in standby when not in use Keep in holster when not in use Disable and remove key and store appropriately
What is a phacoemulsifier?
Energy generating surgical device
Used during cataract surgery to fragment and aspirate lens
Safety precautions for phacoemulsifier?
Use as per manufactures instructions
Inspect before use
Maintain continuous flow of irrigation
