Laryngoscopic Observations Flashcards

1
Q

Vocal Fold Egde

A
  • inspect the medial (free) edge of vfs. Make judgments about: smoothness, straightness, presence of mass/pathologies
  • does NOT require stroboscopy; can be done with regular light

Q

Glottic Closure

A
  • how do vf approximate during closed phase of vibration
  • rated during normal pitch/loudness
  • NEED stroboscopy

Q

Amplitude of Vibration

A
  • how far do the vfs move laterally from midline during phonation
  • can be affected by fundamental frequency and intensity
  • NEED stroboscopy

Q

Mucosal Wave

A
  • ripple like movements of the mucosa over the vfs
  • assessed during normal pitch and loudness
  • does NOT need stroboscopy; can be assessed using normal light

Q

Vertical Level Approximation

A
  • do the vfs meet on the same vertical plane
  • does NOT need stroboscopy

Q

Supraglottic Activity

A
  • look for medio-lateral and antero-posteior involvement of supraglottic structures
  • rated during normal pitch and loudness
  • does NOT need stroboscopy

Q

Vocal Fold Mobility

A
  • vd adduction/abduction assessed for paralysis/paresis of 1 or both vocal folds
  • does NOT need stroboscopy

Q

Phase Closure

A
  • observe amount of time vocal folds begin to part from midline, until lower lips of vfs approximate
  • hypofunction = open
  • hyperfunction = closed
  • NEED stroboscopy

Q

Phase Symmetry

A
  • refers to the degree to which the vfs appear to mirror images of each other while in motion
  • NEED stroboscopy
