What causes laryngeal paralysis?
Degeneration of nerve tissue that innervates the intrinsic laryngeal muscles causing failure of arytenoid cartilages and vocal folds to abduct during inspiration and expiration causing partial to complete occlusion of the airway.
What is the most common form of laryngeal paralysis?
Acquired idiopathic form
What underlying or concurrent conditions are associated with laryngeal paralysis?
Hypothyroidism, hypoadrenocorticism, myasthenia Travis, trauma, inflammation, infection, neoplasia
What is the history you might get from a client with a dog with Laryngeal Paralysis?
Hx of exercise intolerance, respiratory distress, coughing or gagging while eating or drinking, inspiratory noise that worsens with exercise, voice changes.
Usually presents with pronounced inspiratory stridor with respiratory distress
Hyperthermic due to inability to blow off heat
Cyanosis
