Laryngeal Musculature #1 Functions & Add/Abductor Flashcards
What are the functions of the laryngeal musculature?
- Regulate valve openings and closings
- Epiglottic valve
- Ventricular fold valve
- Vocal fold valve
- Provide movement of laryngeal cartilages for speech
There are two main types of muscles of the larynx. What are they?
- Intrinsic
- Extrinsic
In general, where are the attachment points for the intrinsic muscles of the larynx? What is their overall function?
- Have both origin and insertion within the larynx
- Make fine adjustments to the vocal mechanism
What are the main types of intrinsic muscles?
- Adductors (bring together)
- Abductor (pull apart)
- Tensors (tighten muscles)
- Relaxer (relax muscles)
What are the 3 Adductors called?
- Lateral cricoarytenoid
- Transverse arytenoid
- Oblique arytenoid
Action for both the lateral cricoarytenoid muscles & the transverse arytenoid muscle
- Adducts the vocal folds
What is something unique about the Transverse arytenoid?
- It is the only unpaired intrinsic muscle
Action for oblique arytenoid
- Adducts vocal folds (determines how tightly vocal folds are pressed against each other)
- Rocks arytenoid and vocal folds down and inward
Type and action of the posterior cricoarytenoid
- Abductor
- Abducts vocal folds
These Images are all a depiction of which Intrinsic Adductor laryngeal muscle?
Lateral Cricoarytenoid
Which Intrinsic Adductor laryngeal muscle is shown here?
Oblique Arytenoid
These images are all a depiction of which intrinsic adductor laryngeal muscle?
Transverse Arytenoid
Which intrinsic abductor muscle is this? (the only abductor we have to know)
Posterior Cricoarytenoid Muscles
