3
Q

common sense box

A

if temperature increases,
- amount of sunshine increases
- amount of rainfall decreases
- windspeed decreases

as we move further north, during may to october,
- the temperature decreases
- amount of rainfall increases
- the maximum hours of sunshine increases

Q

UK measurements - not wind

A
  1. daily mean temperature, units:celsius, typical range: 5 - 24 degrees
  2. daily total rainfall, measured in : millimeters, typical range: 0 - 20mm. (rainfall is not symmetrical as there are many trace values, eg where it didnt rain)
  3. daily hrs of sunshine measured in hrs
  4. cloud cover measured in oktas, measured in integers(0-8), measures what fraction of the sky is covered
  5. humidity - measured in percentages, how much water vapour is in the air
  6. daily mean visibility(how far u can see), measured in Dm, rounded to the nearest hundred
    - 1 dm = 10m
  7. daily mean pressure (how much the atmosphere is pushing down, measured in hPA(hectopascals), measured using integers

6
Q

uk measurements - wind

A
  1. daily mean windspeed , measured in knots(kn), integers only
    - windspeed can also be measured qualitatively, light, moderate, fresh, strong, most days are light
  2. daily maximum gust
    - measured in knots
    - integers only
  3. wind gust/direction
    - which direction the wind is blowing from
    - in bearing form
    - multiple of 10 only
  4. wind/gust direction(cardinal)
    - uses compass direction(N,SW,ENE)

Q

International stations and info abt them

A
  1. Jacksonville, Florida
    - hot summers
    - hurricanes in October
    - windspeed still relatively low in our data
  2. Bejing, China
    - Hotter, wetter summers
    - Colder winters
  3. Perth Australia
    - Flipped seasons

10
Q

why might random sampling not be reliable for the large data set

A

some days have no recorded data, so may not reach the required number

Q

to increase reliability when measuring daily rainfall

A

replace any tr values with a value between 0-0.05, eg 0.025
