2
Q

Describe Li-ion and LiPo batteries.

Do they last long? Whats the memory effect?

A

-no “memory effect” meaning you can use some charge and charge it up again without limiting the amount of capacity the battery has.
-however, each time you charge the battery it diminishes the capacity just a bit so over a time you might realize that the charge doesnt last as long
-basically these batteries need to be replaced down the road because the full charge doesnt last as long

Q

What is a common laptop keyboard repair?

How should you go about working with the mentioned repair?

A

Removing/replacing keycaps because something fell under keys or keycap is broken.

Check with manufacturer’s instructions for recommendations on what to do when repairing the laptop keyboard. Keycaps an components under keycaps are easy to break.

Q

What form factor would be used to increase your laptop’s memory?

Can all laptops have its memory increased? Why
?

A

Adding a Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module (SO-DIMM).

No. Those laptops have their memory module soldered to the motherboard so changes cannot be made unless the entire motherboard is replaced.

8
Q

In a repair, how can you go about increasing your laptop’s memory?

A

Add a SO-DIMM card. Usually theres an opening at the bottom of the laptop to easily add and remove memory modules.

Some laptops do not have a SO-DIMM card but instead have their memory module soldered to the motherboard, thus not allowing you to increase the memory without changing the entire motherboard.

Q

What is a magnetic disk?

A

Usually found in older laptops as a form storage.

This is the hard drive that we traditionally think about.

Looks like a large, silver spinning disk about 2.5 inches in laptops (~3.5 inches in desktops).

Q

What is a SSD? Describe and give size. Give one advantage.

A

Solid-state drive.

no moving parts inside thus silent, fast access time, less latency.

2.5 in form factors

advantage is greatly increased speed for reading and writing data to the device

14
Q

What is a M.2 Interface? Size and benefits?

A

Smaller form factor of an SSD

smaller than SATA connected SSD; size of a stick of chewing gum

smaller size allows for more storage in smaller space; no cables like how you’d find on a SATA connected SSD; modular so you can easily screw in more for additional storage

16
Q

In a repair, how would you replace an M.2 interface?

A

Usually by unscrewing the cover for the storage bay, unscrewing the current M.2 interface and replacing it.

17
Q

What are three ways to move an operating system (OS) from a spinning hard drive to an SSD?

When it comes to repairs, what should you know?

A

1 – install an OS on the SSD and move over user documents and apps.

Time consuming because it requires an additional OS installment and then you have to manually move over everything the user has in documents and manually install all apps for the user.

2 – create a clone or an image of the hard drive and move that image to the new SSD. Y

To do the repair, you do not have to install a new OS on the SSD. When you move this image from one system to another, all documents and apps move along with it. You need software that can create the image on the hard drive and move/copy it onto the SSD. Many manufacturers will include an app with the SSD that can provide the imaging function, also commercial and open-source options.

3 – drive-to-drive image with no intermediary image file, simply taking everything from one system and copying it sector-by-sector over to the drive thats on another system

Requires you to have 2 systems running simultaneously or the system that you’re using supports having multiple drives inside of it simultaneously.

Q

What hardware allows for wireless functionality on a laptop?

What hardware does a older laptop sometimes have in regards to wireless functionality? What does the hardware do for the laptop?

A

802.11 or bluebooth connections built into the motherboard to allow for

Mini PCI or Mini PCI Express so you can add additional wireless connectivity;
-allows for 802.11 access that will provide you with local area network coverage (LAN) on wireless networks giving high speed internet access or allows for bluetooth connection so you can connect a personal are network (PAN) to earpieces, speakers, etc.

19
Q

What are 3 possible pieces of hardware that a laptop could that would give wireless functionality? (describe what the hardware would do for the laptop and possible location for a repair, not specific names)

A

Three seperate pieces that would allow for wireless functionality such as:

1 for 802.11 access for LAN and internet
1 for bluetooth connectivity to headphones, etc
1 for cellular coverage (wide area network or WWAN) for when not connected to LAN

For repairs, there is usually a cover on the back of the laptop that allows you to access the Mini PCIe interfaces. The wireless cards usually have antenna wires so you connect it to the appropriate port on the wireless card.

20
Q

What 2 form factors do SSD’s used in laptops come in?

A

1.8 and 2.5

21
Q

Most difficult hardware component to replace?

A

integrated GPU

22
Q

Laptop expansion card that enables communication over cellular network?

A

WWAN

23
Q

Where is a laptop’s Wi-Fi antenna?

A

Near the top, inside display case

24
Q

What are the 2 functions of a laptops inverter?

A

used for supplying voltage to backlights in older types of LCD panels

converts DC power into AC power

25
Q

What are 2 biometric options for laptops?

A

fingerprint and face recognition

26
Q

What is NFC? Describe.

Give real life examples of NFC usage.

A

Near-field communication

both devices typically have to be within 4cm

allows for data transfers or authentication

real life ex: using apple pay at grocery store or using phone/watch to authenticate to the laptop
