Those categories and rules that all human language, past and present, have in common.
Language Universals
A language used in a certain geographical area. Variety of a language, specific to a particular group.
Dialect
Distribution of a linguistic feature of a map.
Isogloss
Variety of language used by people in the same socio-cultural position.
Used for education, scholarship, and state administration all over the country.
Sociolect
Used for communication between people with no common language.
Linguistic system used when the speakers of different languages come into contact through trade or colonization.
Pidgin
Pidgin becomes the native language of a community, it is called a creole.
Creole
A very informal language, with a vocabulary composed typically of coinage and arbitrarily. Common used by young speakers
Slang
Conditioned by the subject matter.

Register
The register of a field is full of technical terms which those who have received no training in that field cannot understand.
Jargon
The total of all the varieties of a language that person knows.
Idolect
Ability to change from one variant to another.
Code swtiching
Two distinct varieties of a language co-occur in a speech community , high prestige and low prestige
Disglossia
Knowledge of two languages
