Language, Thought, and Communication Flashcards
how is darwin’s theory supported?
in neonates- to young to learn non- verbal behaviour, so must be innate, like smiling
- blind babies still smile- this all increases the validity
what did darwin believe?
That non-verbal behaviour serves a function that helps us survive because we have evolved to have it

-Major contribution to science, animal communication
what is the von Frisch bee study?
aim- to see how bees communicate the location of food to each other
Method- bees in a glass hive, sugar water 10m and 300 m from the hive, marked with a dot of paint so they could be identified
results- if food is close, round dance. food is far, waggle- dance. 60% of bees who saw the dance went to the food source, understood the message
conclusion- bees use a variety of movements to show location of food
