What is an adjective?
A word that describes a noun. For example: soft, angry, fluffy, green, tall, funny, crazy, strong, horrible, happy, aromatic, sweet
What is an adverb?
A word that describes the verb. For example: slowly, very, happily, greatly, yesterday, always, early, fast, thoroughly, clean.
What is Alliteration?
Alliteration is when there is a repeating a consonant at the start of a series of two or more words.
E.G.
The wild and woolly waits and wonders till we walk by.
What is a Rhetorical Question?
A rhetorical Question is used to ask a question to the reader but it requires no answer, this adds effect.
What is Repetition?
Repetition is when there is a repeat of the same thing or words.
What is a Verb?
A verb is a word that refers to an action.
E.G.
Run, sing, talking, sleeping, creeping, cooking, crashed, crashing, cooked.
What is Rule of Three?
The rule of three is used to help say things which are listed to make them more memorable to remember.
E.G.
Work, Rest and Play.
Stop, Look and Listen
What is a Simile?
A simile is describing something being like or as something else. E.G. Her skin was like silk. He ran like the wind. Her eyes sparked like diamonds.
What is Sibliance?
Sibliance is used to repeat the S or SH sounds within two or more words.
What is Semantic Field?
Semantic Field is when the writer uses a set of words that create an image of a theme.
E.G.
Theme of War: blood, field of red.
Soldiers: the field was littered with uniforms.
What is Personification?
Personification is when the writer gives human qualities to a non-human objects.
E.G.
The mood crept across the sky.
The tree stood like a soldier.
What is Pathetic Fallacy?
Pathetic Fallacy is when the weather is used to create an atmosphere and the mood to the text.
E.G.
The sombre clouds darkened the mood.
There was no sound through the house expect the moaning wind.
What is an Oxymoron?
An oxymoron is when there is two opposite words or ideas brought together to make one. E.G. Sweet sorrow. Amazingly awful. Same difference. Definitely maybe.
What is Onomatopoeia?
Onomatopoeia is a type of word that sounds like the thing that it is describing.
E.G.
Buzz, pop, snap, hiss, meow, roar, bang, woof and splash
What is a Noun?
A noun is words that are the name of a person, thing, place or idea.
E.G.
Television, Shop, Fish, London, America, Michael, Rebecca, Steven, Asda, M&S, Nike and Microsoft
What is a Metaphor?
A metaphor is describing something in terms of something else.
E.G.
His eyes were hollows of madness.
The wind was a torrent of darkness upon the gusty trees.
What is Juxtaposition?
Juxtaposition is when there is a contrasting of two opposite and different ideas. E.G. Beauty and the Beast Hot and Cold Light and Dark Heaven and Hell
What is Imagery?
Imagery is used to create a image in your mind through the use of words.
E.G.
The rich luxury chocolate, pouring heavily throughout the fountain.
What is Hyperbole?
Hyperbole is used to emphasise an idea. E.G. Mile-high ice-cream cones. I told you a thousand times. I'm so hungry i can eat a whole world.
What is Emotive Language?
Emotive Language is used by showing the arouse (challenge, excited, alert) of emotions of the reader.
E.G.
Some dogs are homeless and starving and need your help.
The warm tears trickled down her cheeks as she watched the love of her life walk away.
What is Dramatic Irony?
Dramatic Irony is when the audience or reader knows information that the other characters do not know.
E.G.
Romeo does not know that Juliet is faking her death.
What is Connotations?
Connotations is words or feelings associated with something.
What is a Assonance?
An Assonance is a short vowel repeated within two more words.
E.G.
Anna ate an Apple.
What is a Anecdote?
An Anecdote is a short amusing or interesting, that has a point or moral.
E.G.
A girl tells her friend on an embarrassing incident in a changing room.
