Personification
Give an inanimate object a human feeling or characteristics.
EG-The tree dance in the breeze.
Alliteration
The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words.
EG- The terrible teacher gave us too much homework
Onomatopoeia
The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it.
EG- thump,bang
Simile
Comparing things using like and as.
EG-as strong as an ox
Metaphor
A metaphor is a figure of speech that is used to make a comparison between two things that aren’t alike but do have something in common.A metaphor’s comparison is more indirect, usually made by stating something is something else.
EG-heart of gold.
Sibilance
A group of words that share a s sound
EG- Sadly,sam’s snake slithered away
Rhetorical question
A question that is to make a point rather than to get an answer.
EG-Why do these things always happen to me?
Collegial language
It is an informal conversation between people
EG- slang: innit,cap
Hyperbole
exaggerated statements not meant to be taken literally.
EG- it was so cold i saw polar bears wearing hats
Imagery
The use of description that creates a visual image in out minds
Eg- the sunset was the most gorgeous they’d ever seen; the clouds were edged with pink and gold
Noun
It is an object/thing
EG-The MAN walked across the ROAD
Verb
A word to describe an action
EG- The man RAN across the road
Adjective
A word the describes a noun
EG The OLD man walked across the road
Adverb
A word the describes a verb
EG- the man QUICKLY walked across the road
Repetition
Repeating words that have already been written
Eg- the boy RAN AWAY from the school as he couldn’t stand any of the teacher.
The next do he came back he RAN AWAY again.
Oxymoron
Two opposite word right next to each other
Eg their relationship was a LOVE HATE relationship
Pronoun
A word that replaces a name in a sentence
EG- HE stole my money
Abstract noun
It is a thing that doesn’t exist / you can’t touch it
EG- LOVE
Collective noun
It is name you call a group of people or things
EG- a GAGGLE OF GEESE
Proper noun
It is name for a person or a thing
EG-BIG BEN(the clock tower) rang 1 minute late.
Assonance
It is the repetition of vowels without the repetition of consonants.
EG- MIKE LIKES his new BIKE
Dialect
A form of language spoken in a particular are that uses some of it’s own words, grammar and pronunciations
EG- England-HELLO, Other place-HOWDY
Dialogue
A conversation between two or more people.
EG-“Lisa,” said Kyle, “I need help moving this box of toys for the garage sale.
Dissonance
It is the repetition of the same vowel sounds to create a inharmonious sound or something doesn’t fit into whats happening.
Enjambment
the continuation of a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line, couplet, or stanza
IRONY
using language that normally signifies the opposite
EG- How nice is to ruin some ones day
Monologue
A long a speech by one actor in a play or film
Article
An article is a word used to modify a noun, which is a person, place, object, or idea. Technically, an article is an adjective, which is any word that modifies a noun. Usually adjectives modify nouns through description, but articles are used instead to point out or refer to nouns.
EG- the freckles on his face
Pathos
Words of phrases that evoke pity or sadness.
EG if we don’t make move we are all going to die.
Ryhme
It is the same sound between or the ending of words.
EG crime,time
Rhythm
A regular repeated pattern of movement or sound in words with syllables
Caesura
A pause in the middle of a line
Symbolism
Something being represented by symbols or the symbolic meaning
Semantic field
A set of words that are related
EG kick,foul,foal all related to football
Preposition
A word or a group of words that go before a noun usually an adverb,adjective or noun
