Simile
A comparison where one thing is compared to another using like or as.
The boy was like a bull.
Metaphor
A comparison where one thing is said to actually be another.
The snow is a white blanket.
Personification
When you assign the qualities of a person to something that isn’t human or, in some case, to something that isn’t alive.

Alliteration
The repetition of the same sound at the beginning of words to create an effect.
Big blue bus.
Onomatopoeia
A word that imitates a sound.
The tunnel echoed.
Pattern of three.
Listing three things to create a specific effect.

Language for emotive effect.
Words and phrase deliberately used to provoke a specific emotional reaction.

Rhetorical question
A question that is asked for effect rather than for an answer.

Adjective
A word that describes a place,person or thing.
Lisa is wearing a sleeveless shirt today.
Verb
A doing or being word that has a tense(present,past or future)
She bellowed when she hit her toe.
Phrase
A group of words that can be understood as a unit.
Around the race track.
Clause
A type of phrase that includes a subject and an active verb.
But scored a screamer on the weekend.
Simple sentence
The most basic form of a sentence, consisting of a subject and a verb.
Kyle went to the corner shop.
Compound sentence
A sentence that contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction, such as for,and,nor,but,or,yet,so.
Complex sentence
A sentence that has a main clause and one or more subordinate clause.
Although he was wealthy, he was still unhappy.
