Analysis
Alliteration
When the first letter of a word is the same as thr word next to it
‘The cold, crisp, crust of clean ice”
Assonance
Where the same vowel sound is repeated but the constants are differrent.
E.G. ‘He passed her a sharp, dark glance, she shot a cool, foolish look across the room
Colloquial language
Informal speech
E.G. ‘Chill out’ ‘take a chill pill’
Dissonance
(Opposite of Assonance) A discordant combunation of sounds
E.G. ‘The clash, spew and slow pang of grinding waves against the quay’
Enjabment
Where a sentence continues beyond the end of a line/verse
Hyperbole
Exaggeration
Irony
Where words or ideas are used humorously/sarcastically, to imply the opposite of what they mean
Metaphor
Where a word or phrase is used to imply figurative resembelance, not a literal or actual one.
E.G “he flew into the room”
Oxymoron
Where 2 contrasting/opposite words are brought together
Juxtapostion
A comparison between 2 things
Pathos
Language that evokes feelings of pity or sorrow
Personification
Where a human quality is attributed to a thing/idea.
E.G ‘the moon calls me to her darkened world’
Repetition
Where a word or phrase is repeated to achieve a particular effect
Similie
Where a phrase establishes similarity between 2 things. Like or as are common words used
‘As white as snow’ ‘like a burning star’
Imagery
Simile, personification, metaphors, all achieve the idea of imagery being created
