What is a metaphor
a figure of speech that compares two unrelated things, typically by stating that one thing is another
What is a oxymoron
A figure of speech that has 2 opposite meanings (eg silent scream)
What is a hyperbole
Exaggerated statements or claims that arent supposed to be taken literally
What is personification
Giving a non-human thing, human charecteristics
What is an imperative
A sentence that expresses a direct command
What is alliteration
Same letter or sound at the start of each word (eg crushed and crammed)
What is a pronoun
a word that stands in for a noun, often to avoid the need to repeat the same noun over and over
What is onomatopeia
Sound effect within a sentence (eg the lion roared)
What is repetition
when a word, phrase or statement is repeated several times to emphasise and develop a certain idea
What is a simile
Figure of speech using the comparison of 2 diffrent things (wg fought like cats and dogs)
What is a semantic field
A group of words or expressions that are related in meaning
What is dramatic irony
When the audiance knows something the charecter doesnt (eg poisoning someones drink)
What is a motif
A repeted pattern of words, images, sounds or symbols
Foreshadowing
A clue that something is going to happen
