A word that links words, phrases and clauses.
Eg. The use of the
conjunction, ‘unless’ helps to promote the idea that…
Emotive language
Words and phrases that arouse emotion.
Eg. The use of emotive language/ adjectives in the description of the dog emphasises…
Exaggeration / hyperbole
Creates dramatic
emphasis or humour
Eg. The hyberbole is used to illustrate how extreme the writer’s emotions were.
Anecdote
A short, illustrative
story.

Simile
A comparison where one thing is compared to another using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.

Metaphor
A comparison where one thing is said to be another.

Onomatopoeia
Words which imitate the sounds they represent.

Sarcasm , irony, humour
The tone of voice used shows that while you say one thing, you mean the opposite.
