Concrete Noun
Something that can be identified through the five senses.
Abstract Noun
A noun that is a state, quality, idea rather then a physical object
Common Noun
An ordinary day object or thing, e.g river, lake, tree.
Proper Noun
The title/Name of a place person or thing e.g Sam, London, Atlantic Ocean.
Verb
A word used to describe an action, state of being.
Noun
Person, place or thing.
Adjective
A word or group of words describes the noun in the sentence. e.g “The glistening moon”
Adverb
A word or group of words that describe the verb. e.g “He ran quickly”
Simile
A comparison of an object or action being “like” or “as” something else.
Metaphor
A word or phrase implying an object or action is literally something that it isn’t. e.g “The thunder was a lions growl”
Personification
Giving something non-human, human traits.
Symbolism
Representing things through symbols or symbolic meanings. Like how water could symbolise life and cleanliness, and fire might symbolise anger and hatred.
Hyperbole
When you over exaggerate something for effect.
Oxymoron
When two or more contrasting terms are put together. e.g “happily ignorant”
Alliteration
When the first letter of the word is repeated in the words after it.
Assonance
When the same vowel sound is repeated. e.g sharp, dark, glance
Dissonance
This a different or contrasting combination of sounds. e.g “the clash, spew and slow pang of grinding waves”
Imagery
Something that paints a picture in the readers mind.
Onomatopoeia
A word that sounds like the noise it’s describing.
Repetition
Where a word or phrase is repeated to achieve a particular effect.
Tone
A certain mood or atmosphere of a text.
Motif
A repeated idea, image or theme that has a symbolic significance in the text.
