Tone rule #1:
low class consonant + live ending = mid tone

comes from sanskrit and pali, both indian languages
Tone rule #2
middle class initial consonant + live end = midtone
Tone rule#3
low class initial consonant with dead ending and a short vowel has a high tone
tone rule#4
low class initial consonant + dead syllable with a long vowel = falling tones
