Anaphora
Repetition of words or phrases at the beginning of consecutive lines or sentences
Anecdote
Brief narrative that focuses on a particular incident or event.
Colloquialism
Informal words or expressions not usually acceptable in formal writing.
Euphemism
Indirect less offensive way of saying something unpleasant
Ex. Died = Passed Away
Invective
Intensely strong, highly emotional, verbal attack
Litotes
Type of understatement where an idea is expressed by negating its opposite
Ex. It wasn’t a pretty picture
Metonymy
Substituting the name of one object for another in a related way.
Ex. Pen is stronger than a sword
Philippic
Strong verbal denunciation
Syllepsis
Construction in which one word is used in 2 different senses
Ex. Threw a ball, then threw a fit.
Understatement
Deliberate representation of something as a lesser magnitude than its is. Deliberate under emphasis.
Inductive reasoning
Deriving general principles from particular facts or instances
Ex. Every cat ive seen has 4 legs, therefore cats have 4 legs.
Deductive reasoning
Reasoning where a conclusion is reached by stating a general principle and then applying that principle to a specific case
Ex. Sun rises everyday - sun will rise every Tuesday morning
Syllogism
3 part deductive argument in which a conclusion is based on a major premise and a minor premise
Ex all men are mortal
Socrates is a man
Therefore Socrates is mortal
Absolute
A word free from limitations or qualifications.
ex. Best, all, unique, perfect
