Agree- Functional theory and linguistic reflection

A

As society develops, they use language to reflect this and adapts to those using it e.g. neologism ‘selfie’ and conversion of ‘email’ from noun to a verb. Linguistic reflection says language changes as attitudes do. Supported by saphir whorf

Disagree- prescriptivist viewpoint and those who actively seek to enforce it

Johnathon Swift- a proposal for Improving and Ascertaining the Eng Lang. Standardise it. Johnson’s dictionary more than 30,000 words ‘tongues have a natural tendency to degeneration’. Eng will stop being in a state of flux at some point as a constant battle being fought to standardise usage. BUT admitted no dictionary of a living tongue can ever be perfect- saw that impossible to restrain
