Simile
A comparison where one thing is compared to another, using the words,{like, as .. as}
Example = Her hair glistened in the rain like nose hairs after a sneeze
Metaphor
A comparison where one thing is said to actually be another.
Example = An icy blanket of shadow was covering the world
Personification
When you assign the qualities of humans or persons to an inanimate object or thing.
Example = The icy mist was conquering the graveyard
Alliteration
The repetiton of the same sound at the beginning of words to create an effect
Example = The cabin had an eerie entrance
Onomatopoeia
A word that imitates a sound
Example = The flesh SIZZLED in the pot
Pattern of Three or Rule of Three
Listing three things to create a specific effect
Example = Stop, look and listen
Language for Emotive Effect
Words and phrases deliberately used to provoke a specific emotional reaction
Example = The defenceless kittens were crammed into the box
Rhetorical question
A question that is aked for effect rather than for an question
Example = Who wants to look something like that?
Adjective
A word that describes a place, person or thing
Example = The ancient street
Verb
A doing or being word that has a tense (present, past or future)
Example = I sped on the highway
Phrase
A group of words that can be understood as a unit
Example = His face was unreadable
Clause
A group of words that consists of a subject and a single verb
Example = The dog ran through the yard
Subject = The dog Verb = ran
Simple sentence
The most basic form of sentence consisting of a subject and a verb
Example = I sprinted
Compound sentence
A sentence that contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction, such as for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
Example = My girlfriend was watching television and i went out.
Complex Sentence
A sentence that has a main clause and one or more subordinate (dependent) clauses. The clauses are linked by a subordinating conjunction such as because, since, after, although, when (and many others) or when (and many others) or a relative pronoun such as: that, who (or) which.
Example = The student,who had finished her last exam, was out celebrating.
(within the commas is the subordinate clause)
