Pathetic Fallacy
A description of the weather to symbolise a characters emotional state.
Synechdoche
Using a body part to represent a whole concept or general idea. E.g., Using hands to represent workers.
Metonymy
Using a word to represent a larger concept to which it is related. E.g., Using bottle to refer to alcohol.
Anthropomorphism
Giving human qualities to an animal or object.
Cacophony
Combining words to create or imply a harsh or unpleasant sound.
Euphony
Combining words to create or imply a pleasing sound.
Allusion
A casual reference to another literary work or real-world event.
Quotation
Repeating the words of another work or person, add meaning or authority to a text.
Emotive Language
Language that is designed to provoke an emotional response from the audience.
Attacks & Praise
Affirming one idea or person while criticising their opposite.
Colloquialism
Using vernacular or slang language, often to appeal to the ‘everyday’ person.
Rhetorical question
A question that is not posed to an elicit answer but to encourage the audience to think or for which is self evident.
Evidence
Facts or examples used to support an argument
Statistics
The presentation and analysis of data, often expressed numerically
Aphorism
Short statements of belief or opinion that is expressed as a truth.
