Personification
Give an inanimate object object a human feeling or characteristic

Alliteration
When two or more words start with the same word or sound
Eg: green grass
Onomatopoeia
This is when a word represents an action
Eg: Bang,crash
Simile
When one thing is compared to a different type of word
Eg: His teeth where as white as snow
Metaphor
This is when a word or phrase is applied to an object which is not literally applicable
Eg: The curtain of night fell upon
Sibilance
When an ‘s’ or a ‘sh’ sound is made
Eg: Sadly Sam sold seven serpents
Rhetorical question
A question that is not meant to be answered and gives effect
Eg: How could I do this
Colloquial language
When a conversation is not informal and slang terms are used
Eg: Put your money where your mouth is
Hyperbole
Exaggerated phrases not meant to be taken seriously
Eg: This bag weighs a ton
Imagery
Visually describing a place
Noun
A place, person, object, feeling
Eg: The man walked across the road
Verb
A word used to state an action
Adverb
A word that describes a verb
Eg: The man ran fastly
Repetition
When a word or phrase is repeated
Eg: come here, come here, come here
Oxymoron
When two words are used that contradict each other
Eg: deafening silence
Pronoun
This refers to someone
Eg: He, she, it
Abstract noun
Something you can’t see or touch
Eg: love is in the air
Proper noun
A name used for a place, person or organisation
Eg: Joe, London, CAFOD
Collective noun
A word used to group a collective of people animals or things
Eg: A litter of puppies , a troop of monkeys
Assonance
Resemblance of sound between syllables of words that are close
Eg: Rise high in the bright sky
Dialect
A different form of language that might be strange to a specific region
Eg: A Northern American might say ‘hello’ A southern American might say ‘howdy’
Dialogue
A conversation between two or more people
Eg: Jake said ‘can you help me’ Jane said ‘no’
Dissonance
This is the use of harsh sounding words in poetry
Eg: screech, the alarm went off
Enjambment
The meaning runs over from one poetic line to another
Eg: The man was standing there
Not giving a care
Irony
Using language that signifies the opposite for humans for emphatic effect
Eg: Don’t go overboard with the gratitude
Monologue
A speech presented by a single character to express their meantal thoughts aloud
Eg: ‘I love Alice’
Pathos
A way of convincing an audience of an argument by an emotional response
Eg: please can I have this game I’ve had a really hard week
Rhyme
Corresponding words or the ending of words
Eg: balloon moon
Rhythm
The beat or pace of the poem
Eg: I will find the keys for you, and you must find a place to park the car
Caesura
The natural ending to poetic phrase, especially when it ends in the middle of a line
Eg: the headphone explodes || breaking the mold
Symbolism
Using an object or word that is used to represent an abstract idea. An action, place, word or object can be symbolism
Eg: In animal farm Napoleon represents Stalin
Semantic field
Words that are all related to one another
Eg: The semantic field of Violence is punch, kick, fight
Preposition
A word or group of words used before a noun or pronoun to a verb or adjective
Eg: he sat on the chair
Article
A word used to modify a noun
Eg: A boy ate an apple
Declarative
A scentence in the form of a statement
Exclamatory
An exclamatory sentnce expresses strong emotion, and it ends with an exclamation mark
Interrogative
An interrogative sentence is usually in the form of a question
Imperative
An imperative sentence usually contains a command
