Simile
A comparison where one thing is compared to another using like or as .e.g. he was petit like a mouse
Metaphor
A comparison where one thing is said to actually be another .e.g. when i score a try i feel unstoppable
Personification
When you give human qualities to something that isn’t living or isn’t human e.g. the tall lamppost
Alliteration
The repetition of the same sound at the beginning of words to create an effect e.g. the green grass grows from the ground
Onomatopoeia
A word which imitates a sound e.g. i was so hungry my stomach was belching
Pattern of three
Listing three things to create a specific effect e.g. see it,say it, sorted
Language for emotive effect
Words and phrases deliberately used to provoke a specific emotion reaction e.g. a young frail primary school child was involved in a tragic hit and run down by a suspected drunken immigrant
Rhetorical question
A question that is asked for effect rather that for an answer e.g. why don’t you act your age not your shoe size?
Adjective
A word that describes a person,place or thing e.g. the blue flower
Verb
A doing or being word that has a tense (present,past or future) e.g. i ran across a road
Clause
A type of phrase that includes a subject and an active verb e.g. and then we walked home
Simple sentence (single-clause sentence)
The most basic form of sentence, consisting of a subject and a verb e.g.he walked
Complex sentence (a type of multi-clause sentence)
A sentence that has a main clause and one or more subordinate (dependent) clauses. The clauses are linked by a subordinating conjunction,such as because,since,after,although,or when(and many others) or a relative pronoun such as that,who or which e.g. the headmaster,held an assembly in-front of the whole school to sing the praises about the recent year 10’s rugby success
Punctuation
Marks used to aid the understanding of a piece of writing. Writers can use punctuation imaginatively to create an effect e.g.when we went shopping my mum had to buy; eggs,milk and bread.
Phrase
A group of words that can be understood as a unit e.g. over the bridge
