Simile
A descriptive technique that compares one thing as or like another.
Metaphor
A descriptive technique that names a person, action or thing as something else.
Personification
When human attributes are given to an object.
Symbolism
The use of symbols to represent other ideas or qualities.
Sensory imagery
The use of mental images that are created for the reader from detailed descriptions.
Hyperbole
Exaggerated language used for effect.
Sound devices
Techniques that convey meaning through sound : Alliteration, Sibilance, Assonance, Onomatopoeia, poly syllabic sounds, mono syllabic sounds, plosives, fricatives.
Semantic field
Words that are grouped by a theme or topic.
Word Choice
The connotations of the words chosen by the poet, and what they suggest to the reader: Nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns.
Pathetic Fallacy
The attribution of human feelings to inanimate objects of nature
