Repetition of initial sound in a group of words

Colloquialism
An informal or conversational word/phrase
E.g. Dunno
Connotation
The emotional meaning or association of a word
Dialogue
Direct speech from a character
Emotive language
Language chosen because of its connotations
E.g. Slaughtered rather than killed
Metaphor
A very close and direct comparison, when one thing ‘becomes’ another
E.g. The light of my life
Onomatopoeia
The sound of the word spoken echoes the noise described
E.g. The slithering snake
Personification
Giving non-human objects human characteristics
E.g. The wind danced in the trees
Repetition
Where a word or phrase is of the utmost relevance to the piece of work is repeated for effect
E.g. Phil, phil, phil, phil, phil
Rhetorical question
A question that does not necessarily need an answer
Designed to make the reader think
E.g. Do we really think this is right
Simile
A strait forward comparison
E.g. The applause was like waves crashing

Way in which words are organised into sentences
Tense
Time at which the action takes place
E.g. Past, present, future
