Learn language features
Connotation
An idea or feeling which a word invokes
Personal Pronouns
It takes place instead of a noun
e.g ‘he’ went to the zoo, ‘Sam’ went to the zoo
Repetition
An idea or action that repeats to imply an important meaning
Imperative
A command that is used. It can be used to show status and character.
e.g “Buy it now!”
Metaphor
Relating one word to another to describe. Using the words ‘was’ and ‘is’.
e.g The moon was a jewel
Simile
Relating one word to another to describe. Using the words ‘like’.
e.g The moon was like a jewel
Alliteration
The occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of word or closely connected words. Used to help remember or describe.
e.g The snake slithers sneakily
Assonance
The occurrence of the same vowel sounds in closely connected words. Can be used to make a sentence sound
Personification
Giving living characteristics to something non-living.
e.g The sky smiled at her
Allusion
A brief reference to something well-known
Slang
Informal language. Is a type of language that is typically restricted to a particular group of people and be outdated.
Cliché
A phrase or opinion that is overused and is seen as a lack of originality.
Onomatopoeia
A word that has a sound associated with what is named.
e.g Boom, Crash
Hyperbole
Exaggerated statements that not meant to be taken literally.
Pun
A play on words. the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings. Sometimes used a jokes.
Jargon
special or technical words used by a profession or group.
e.g Doctors talking about medicine
Colloquial
Informal Language. Are words that are used everyday, usually when speaking.
Oxymoron
The use of two or more words that are opposites put together to describe and make sense.
Anecdote
A short personal story about a real incident or person.
Parts of Speech
Verbs, nouns, adjectives etc.
Questions
A question that is sometimes aimed at reader to make reader think. Rhetorical or Not
Rhymes
To help remember a phase or to make it easy to read.
Listing
This is used to exaggerate or show many different examples.
Contrast
To compare two or more words in order to show unlikeness or differences.
