Simile
A comparison using like or as.
Metaphor
A comparison saying one thing IS another
Personification
Saying that something not alive (e.g. a rock) is alive (e.g. Loneliness taunted him.He hated his new school.)
Powerful verbs
Verbs (actions,doing words) that make writing more vivid
Adverbs
Adjectives that describe a verb and usually end in “ly” e.g. The dog barked LOUDLY.
Alliteration
Words starting with the same sound e.g. Burning bright
Plosive sounds
Alliteration with p’s and b’s
Sibilance
Alliteration with “s” sounds e.g. Slimy Slytherin
Repetition
Repeating certain words to make writing deeper
Rule of three
A list of three things with the same subject. Makes the writing sound like a plan.
Hyperbole
Exageration
Emotive
Makes you feel something e.g. Sadness, fear
Persuasive
Getting someone to have a certain opinion on a topic.
Image or Imagery
When strong pictures form in our minds due to vivid, well described writing.

When an author gives an effect
