Simile
A comparison using ‘Like’ or ‘As’
Motif
A repeated idea or theme that has significance to the text
Assonance
Repetition of a vowel sound to convey an idea
Oxymoron
When contradictory words are placed close to each other. Often used for sarcasm or to demonstrate a contradictory truth.
Sibilance
Repetition of ‘s’ sound.
Creates imagery
Emotive language
Language that creates a strong emotional response in the reader
Pathetic Fallacy
When human emotions are attributed to things that are not human such as objects or animals
Anaphora
The repetition of the same phrase at the start of a sentence or clause
Asyndeton
When conjunctions are left out between clauses or words. Usually creating a list like structure
Caricature
An exaggerated representation of a character used for comedic effect
Consonance
The repetition of consonant sounds
Ethos
Appeals to audience’s status.
Makes them more likely to trust them
Pathos
Appeals to audience’s emotion
Creates empathy
Logos
Appeals to audience’s reason.
Builds up logical arguments.
