What is alliteration
When two or more words begin with the same sound. E.g: Clutter clothes closet.
What is repetition
When the same word, character, etc. is repeated multiple times. E.g: It was hot hot hot
What is rhetorical question
A question that doesn’t need an answer. E.g: Fed up of failing your exams?
What is a fact
Something that is true and can be proven. E.g: Paracetamol can relieve the pain of a headache.
What is statistic
Using numbers (usually percentages) to present as a fact. E.g: 33% of people suffer from headaches once a month.
What is emotive language
The use of vocabulary that is intended to make the reader feel a particular emotion. E.g: The dog was left by its owner
What is imperative verb
An instruction or command. E.g: “Be” quiet
“Sit” down
“Tidy” your room
What is euphemism
Replacing a usually harsh word for something more polite.
E.g. he passed away
What’s personification
Giving human attributes to non-living things
E.g. “the air screamed”
What is pathetic fallacy
When the weather or atmosphere described the mood.
E.g. really sunny (weather) = happiness
Dark night (atmosphere) = evil or mysterious atmosphere
What is a simile
Comparing 2 things with “like” or “as”
E.g. she was “like” a gazelle
What is metaphor
Comparing 2 things using “is” or “are”
E.g. she “is” a monster
What is extended metaphor
Pick a metaphor and make it large (descriptions)
Example of extended metaphor
Life is like a roller coaster, you’ll either be at the greatest heights or you’ll be at the greatest lows just like a roller coaster
What is oxymoron
2 opposite words side by side
E.g. the small giant
What is juxtaposition
When you have 2 opposing ideas
Example of juxtaposition
Grab an oxymoron and expand on it
E.g. the small giant was tiptoeing trying to reach the top shelf but his small arms wouldn’t let him reach
Chremamorphism
Giving non living attributes to human being, e.g. he blasted through the room
