Pathetic Fallacy
Weather or atmosphere describes the mood
-e.g. dark night - evil ,nasty atmoshpere
Personification
A non-human is given human qualities
E.g. - the pen is sitting on the table
Simile
Compare two things using ‘like or ‘as’
E.g- he was as strong as an ox
Metaphor
Compare two things using ‘is or ‘are’
E.g. -she is a monster, you are a monster
Extended metaphor
Pick a metaphor explain how and turn it into a long metaphor
e.g - life is a rollercoaster you , can never prepare for the ups and downs it can bring.
Oxymoron
Two opposite words side by side
E.g- the small giant
Juxtaposition
Two opposing ideas , get an oxymoron and explain how
E,g-the small giant was tiptoeing trying to reach the top shelf, however his small arms did not help him
Symbolism
When objects are linked and present meaning
3.g- face mask = covid , nappy = baby
Semantic -Field
Words across an extract can be linked to one idea
E.g - two metres , hand sanitizer, face mask = covid
Irony
When events in the text even suprises the characters
E.g when scrooge changes in christmas carol
Rhetorical question
Question in a piece of writing that does not require an answer
HYPErbole
When you hype, overexxagerate
E,g - im so angry im going to killd him
Assonance
Repetition of the vowels sound
E.g-light the fire - ‘i’ sound
Alliteration
Words in a row begin with the same letter
E.g - the big blue ball bounced down the road
Sibilance
Words in a row begin with the ‘s’ letter or have the ‘s’ sound
E.g- the snake was slowly hissing
Euphemism
When you say something in a indirect manner
E,g- “guys he does not have long left”
Emotive language
When the writer makes the reader feel a perticular emotion

When words describe sounds

When writer uses evidence to support what they are saying

When you give a person animal features
E.g- john barked at me
