Q

Idiomatic expressions

A

A figure of speech in which the actual literal meaning of the word is not intended. Rather the expression is something that has evolved or entered common usage.

Example: kick the bucket means to die

If idiomatic expressions are translated directly into another language it probably doesn’t make any sense. To avoid confusion or offense idiomatic expressions must be taught or avoided when speaking to ELL’s.

Q

Skill Acquisition Theory

A

Skill Acquisition Theory proposes that language learning, like other types of learning, develops in three phases of knowledge. Declarative knowledge is explicit, self-conscious knowledge about a topic, often rule-based. Procedural knowledge is implicit, and understands behavior when doing the action. Automatic knowledge arrives with near- perfect fluency, and is unconscious
