Alliteration
the repetition of initial consonant sounds. ex) peter piper picked a peck of pickled peppers
Allusion
a reference to a well known person, place, event, or work. ex) chocolate is his kryptonite
Dialect
a particular form of a language spoken by a group. ex) southerners saying howdy y’all
Dialogue
conversation between 2+ people in a book, movie or play. ex) “Hey,” said Lisa. “Could you pass me that crayon.”
Flashback
a scene set in a time earlier than the main story. ex) the titanic movie starts with old Rose
Foreshadow
a warning or indication of a future event. ex) in thor when odin says loki looked to be born as a king
Hyperbole
an extreme exaggeration. ex) I’m so hungry i could eat a cow
Idiom
a well-known expression that can mean something else. isn’t a dictionary definition. ex) a dime a dozen, tie the knot, cut me some slack
Imagery
a particular word that creates a visual representation. ex) the autumn leaves are a blanket on the ground
Irony
words where there is a root sense of hiding what is actually the case in order to achieve a special effect. sarcasm. ex) saying during a thunderstorm “what beautiful weather”
Metaphor
to compare a word/object to another which is not literally applicable. ex) he was a dumb rock
Mood
the feeling in a story, created through description and setting. ex) the mood was sad
Onomatopoeia
a phonetic word imitating a sound. ex) buzz, pop, whoosh
Oxymoron
a phrase that seems to have two opposing words/meanings. ex) bittersweet, paper towel, jumbo shrimp
Personification
non-human objects being described with human qualities. ex) the leaves danced in the wind
Rhyme Scheme
the pattern/rhyme sequence. ABAB. ex) limericks have a rhyme scheme of aabba
Setting
the time/location of a book. ex) the story took place in Californiana in 1975
Simile
a comparison of two things that are often introduced by like or as. ex) as tall as a mountain
Stanza
a grouping of lines in a poem. like a paragraph
Suspence
a state of excitement/anxiety from uncertainty of what’s going to happen. ex) jaws theme song
Symbolism
an object used to represent something. ex) hearts = love, doves = peace
Theme
the central idea of a literary work. theme is implied through the plot events. ex) theme of justice
Exposition
Introduction. the beginning of the story where the time, place, and characters are introduced
Initial Incident
the first event in a story that starts the action.
Rising Action
the series of events occurring before the climax. these events build tension and interest.
Climax
the highest point of action which the character overcomes the conflict
Falling action
the action that tied up the loose ends and finishes the story
Resolution
Denouement. the outcome of the story.
Protagonist
the main character who is trying to overcome a problem or achieve a goal. ex) cole matthews in touching spirit bear
Antagonist
the opposition to the main character. ex) the villain of the story
Dynamic character
a character who changes throughout the course of the story. ex) cole matthews
Static Character
character who remains the same throughout the story. ex) cole matthews father

the problem or issue in the story

ex) harry potter vs voldemort
