Language And Thought Flashcards
What is the definition of reasoning?
A process whereby arguments/beliefs are generated and evaluated using inductive, deductive and analogical reasoning
What is the definition for language?
Symbols, sound, meanings in combination that allows for communication amoung humans
What are mental models?
Involve a representation that describes, explains or predicts how things work
What are categories?
Groupings based on common properties
What is a mental representation of a category?
A concept
How do we categories objects?
Comparison with defining features
Similarities/dissimilarities to prototypes
What is superordinate?
Levels of categories
More abstract than basic, members share few specific features, level of metaphor
Broadest, and quickest response? ( levels of categories)
Basic
What is subordinate?
More specific than basic
What is induction? (Reasoning)
Reasoning from specific observations to general propositions ( relies heavily on probabilities)
What is deduction? (Reasoning)
Drawing a conclusion from a set of assumptions or premises
What is analogical reasoning?
Is a process by which people understand a novel situation in terms of a familiar one
What is the process by which we transform one situation into another to meet a goal?
Problem solving
What are the three strategies of problem solving?
Algorithms
Mental simulation
Hypothesis testing
What is algorithms?
A systematic procedures that will produce a solution to a (simply) problem
