Simile-(language)
A descriptive technique that compares one thing with another, using ‘like’ or ‘as’.
Metaphor-(language)
A descriptive technique that names a person, thing or action as something else.
Personification-(language)
A metaphor attributing human qualities to an object.
Symbolism-(language)
The use of symbols (objects) to represent other ideas or qualities.
Sensory imagery-(language)
Mental images that are created for the reader from detailed descriptions.
Hyperbole-(language)
Exaggerated language used for effect.
Sound devices-(language)
alliteration, sibilance, assonance (same vowel sounds), onomatopoeia, polysyllabic sounds, monosyllabic sounds, plosives and fricatives (soft, mellifluous [pleasant sounding] sounds [f, th])
Repetition-(structure)
when words, phrases, lines are repeated to make ideas clearer / emphasise something significant
Listing-(structure)
when items, objects or verbs are collected together in the form of a list.
Rhetorical questions-(structure)
a question asked by the speaker, not expecting an answer.
Caesura-(structure)
a break or pause in the middle of a line (e.g. a colon, semicolon, full stop).
Enjambment-(structure)
the continuation of a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line, couplet, or stanza.
Rhyme-(structure)
words that sound the same, especially at the ends of lines in poetry.
Juxtaposition-(structure)
two things positioned close together with contrasting effect.
Semantic Field-(language)
words that are grouped together by a theme or topic
