Constraint
Ways in which powerful participants block or control contributions of less powerful participants, through interrupting etc.
Face
A person’s self esteem or emotional needs
Face threatening act
A communicative act that threaten’s someone’s face needs
Ideology
A set of belief systems, attitudes or a world view help by an individual or groups
Influential power
Power used to influence or persuade others
Instrumental power
Instrumental power Power used to maintain and enforce authority
Less powerful participants
Those with a lower status in a given context, who are subject to constraints imposed by more powerful participants
Oppressive discourse strategy
Linguistic behaviour that is open in exercising power and control
Repressive discourse strategy
An indirect way of exercising power and control through constraints
Personal power
Power held by individuals as a result of their roles in organisations
Political power
Power held by those with the backing of the law
Power asymmetry
A marked difference in power between two individuals in discourse
Powerful participant
A speaker with a higher status in a given context able to impose power to some extent
Social group power
Power held by members of dominant social groups e.g. class, status, age, gender
Unequal encounter
A term highlighted by Norman Fairclough, this is just another word for asymmetrical, highlighting the power one speaker has over another.
