Poetic, Referential, Metalinguistic, Phatic, Conative, Emotive
Referential
The sharing of information with an intended audience.
Emotive
The expression of emotions and desires.
Conative
The use of commands, directions, or questions, with the aim of a reaction from the audience.
Poetic
A focus on the formation of the message, rather than the interlocutors.
Phatic
Language aimed to create and maintain social connections.
Metalinguistic
Language that describes language itself.
Register
Stylistic variation of language that relates to formality.
Tenor
The relationships between participants.
Audience
The intended listeners/readers.
Cultural Context
Aspects of context that relate to the culture of the author/speaker, including attitudes, beliefs, or values.
Situational Context
The outside of the text - domain, tenor, text type, setting, and mode.
Semantic domain
The subject matter/topic being discussed.
Mode
Whether a text is spoken or written.
