Non-verbal- body language, facial expression, written, haptic (touch)
Animal- non-verbal (stance, body language), call systems, physiological colour change

A system of communication agreed upon and used by a community
What is a communication system?
Symbols that follow a system agreed upon and used by a community of users
What are the 2 types of symbols?
Arbitrary
Iconic
What is an arbitrary symbol?
where there is no link between the form and meaning
e.g. green= go, red = stop
What is an iconic symbol?
the form resembles some aspect of the meaning
e.g. pedestrian crossing- walking man & bicycle
What is language?
a system of symbols
What modality do spoken languages use?
Oral-aural
What modality do signed languages use?
visual-gestural
What is modality?
channels through which language is expressed & received
What is unique about language?
conventionalism
grammaticality- English= Subject, Verb, Object
German= Subject, Object, Verb
NZSL= Object, Subject, Verb

displacement- talk about things in difference place and time
