What is emotive language?
Language to create an emotional response
What are connotations?
An idea associated with a word or phrase
‘red is danger’
What is a Juxtaposition?
To place words side by side to emphasise contrast
Whit is assonance?
Repetition of vowel sounds to create internal rhyming
What is anaphora?
Repetition of a word at the start of sentences
What is an onomatopoeia?
Words that sound like their action
‘Zip’
What is sibilance?
Strongly emphasises letters
‘s, sh, ch, z, j’
What is an alliteration?
Repetition of a particular sound
What is sensory imagery?
Language that appeals to senses
‘Clear blue sky’ - happy because it’s sunny
What is irony?
The use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning ‘The worlds biggest dog was called Tiny’
What is symbolism?
Objects or characters representing an idea, concept or event
What is a hyperbole?
The use of extravagant exaggeration
‘I am so hungry i could eat a horse!’
What is personification?
Giving human qualities to an inanimate object
‘The run down house appeared depressed’
What is a metaphor?
Comparison of something to describe it through something in common ‘Love is a rose’
What is a simile?
Describing something by comparison that is unlike the reality ‘As white as snow’ - describing someones face
What is an oxymoron?
Two contradictory terms next to each other
What is end rhyme?
Rhyme at the end of stanza’s
What is internal rhyme?
Rhyme within lines
What is cross rhyme?
When an internal word rhymes with the end of the next/previous line
What is sporadic rhyme?
Rhyming that occurs unpredictably in a poem
Most of poem doesn’t rhyme but then some of it does
What is a caesura?
A complete full stop during or at the end of a line, causing a pause.
What is an enjambment?
The continuation of one line onto the next without pause
What is allegory?
When characters or descriptions convey a hidden symbolic or moral message
What is antithesis?
Direct opposites
What is foreshadowing?
Making reference to future events
