What are anecdotes and their purpose?
Anecdotes are short amusing/interesting stories about an incident/person. Their purpose is to play on the feelings of the reader.
What are attacks and their purpose?
Attacks are instances of fierce criticism or opposition. The purpose of attacks are to undermine the authority of the opposing opinion.
What are clichés and their purpose?
Clichés are a phrase or opinion that is overused and betrays original thought. The use clichés creates an image in the readers minds and makes the opinion more graphic.
What does alliteration mean and what is its purpose?
Alliteration is the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of closely connected words. The purpose of alliterations is to tap in into the general sense of what seems true.
What do connotations mean and it’s purpose?
Connotations are an idea/feeling that a word evokes in a person along with its primary/literal meaning. It’s purpose is to provide a familiar feeling to the reader with the material and convey an meaning, usually economically.
What is the definition of reason & logic and it’s purpose?
Reason & Logic is the premise of an argument and it’s purpose is to add emphasis to an argument/key idea.
What does hyperbole mean and it’s purpose?
Hyperbole means an exaggerated statement and it’s purpose is to entertain the reader and to showcase the writers cleverness.
What are emotive appeals and it’s purpose?
Emotive appeals are a method of persuasion that is meant to gain an emotional response. The purpose of this is to give emphasis and prominence to a point.
What is emotive language and it’s purpose?
Emotive language is the deliberate choice of words to elicit emotion. The use of it creates associations in the readers mind by pointing out similarities.
What does evidence mean and it’s purpose?
Evidence is the available body of facts indicating whether a belief is valid and it is used to support the accuracy of a major point related to the contention.
What is generalisation and it’s purpose?
Generalisation is the action of generalisation and it’s purpose is to engage the reader with its friendly tone.
What is a pun and it’s purpose?
A pun is a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words which sound alike but have different meanings. Puns are used to make the writer appear fair, moderate and reasonable.
What is repetition and why is it used?
Repetition is the action of repeating something that has already been written and it’s used to make the reader feel there is no other way in seeing the issue at hand.
What is inclusive language and it’s purpose?
Inclusive language is free of words that reflect discriminatory views of particular groups. Inclusive language alerts the reader to the multiple meaning behind key words and phrases.
What is a metaphor and it’s purpose?
A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an action to which it is not literally applicable. A metaphor encourages readers to respond to an argument in an subjective, rather than an objective manner.
