Simile
A comparison using “like” or “as”. Example: “She was as fast as a cheetah.”
Metaphor
A direct comparison saying something is something else. Example: “Time is a thief.”
Personification
Giving human qualities to non-human things. Example: “The wind whispered through the trees.”
Alliteration
The repetition of the same sound at the start of words. Example: “Big brown bear.”
Onomatopoeia
Words that imitate sounds. Example: “Bang!”
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for effect. Example: “I’ve told you a million times!”
Emotive Language
Words used to create strong emotions. Example: “The heart-wrenching story moved everyone to tears.”
Rhetorical Question
A question asked for effect

Direct Address

Using three descriptive words or ideas for impact. Example: “The product is fast

Formal is professional and polite; informal is casual and conversational.
