Landslides haha get it(land) slides Flashcards
What is a Landslide?
Landslides are massive earth movements down a slope. It may consist of rocky materials, a slurry ( mud mixed with water) or snow mixed with rocky materials known as an avalanche.
How can they be categorized
Landslides can be categorised as fast or slow OR
Landslides can be categorised as dry or wet slides.
Types of landslides (slow)
Slow movement-
Soil Creep
Solifluction
Types of landslides(2)

Causes of Landslides
(Because landslides tend to be sudden and fast there are quite a few factors that contribute to the build up tension or motion of the earth materials. )
These include:
Excessive rainfall which makes the soil heavy and cause it to move downslope. Snow melt lubricating the soil making it heavier.
Examples of Major Landslides
Three debris flows in two days in Ravines Poisson and Ecrivisse in St. Lucia killed sixty people and injured 32 others.
Venezuela mudslides of 1999
Nevado del Ruiz volcano in central Colombia
Landslide effects
- Destruction of infrastructures such as roads and transport links
- Loss of vegetation on slopes.
- Habitats may be destroyed so animals have nowhere to live.
- Loss of homes and buildings.
- Death of persons
- Tsunamis where landslide materials flow into the sea or where submarine landslides occur.
