What was the aim of classical geology?
To establish the relative ages of rocks exposed at the surface.
What methods were used for dating in classical geology?
Superposition and fossil records. These however only gave us relative date.
What is presently used for geological dating?
The radioactive decay of isotopes such as uranium and thorium.
What are the 2 zones of the continental crust? and what are they primarily made from?
The upper, which is felsic material with a high silica content.
The lower, which is matic material with a high iron and magnesium content.
What is rifting?
The stretching of continental landmass, this forms rift valleys which oceans move into.
What is folding?
The compression of landmass, this forms mountains.
