The Supreme Court considers 3 factors in deciding whether an event or time between the illegal conduct and the police’s acquistion of the possible-tainted fruit is sufficient to “purge the taint”. (Eman C-69)

Brown v. Illinois case facts
A
The illegality was an arrest that violated the 4th Amendment, and the possibly-tainted ‘fruit’ was a confession by the arrestee. But the court has since indicated that these factors are to be applied in other types of derivative evidence scenarios as well. (Eman C-70)
