Landing Gear Flashcards
What absorbs the taxi shocks in an oleo strut?
The compressed air or nitrogen.
How much air or nitrogen should be put into an oleo shock strut?
Enough to extend the piston to the specified height in the maintenance manual.
What is the purpose of using an exerciser jack when servicing a shock strut with fluid?
The jack moves the piston up and down inside the cylinder to purge all the air out of the oil to ensure the proper amount of oil is in the strut.
What is a Squat switch and where is it located?
It energizes a circuit to prevent gear retraction handle from being moved when the aircraft weight is on the gear. Located on the torsion link of one of the main gears.
What kind of device is used as a sensor to detect the condition of a retractable landing gear?
Precision Microswitch
What is the purpose of the centering cam in the nose wheel shock strut?
Forces the nose wheel straight back with the strut before its retracted.
What absorbs the initial landing impact in an oleo strut?
The transfer of oil through a metered orifice.
Where may a list of approved lubricants for greasing an aircraft retractable gear be found?
Aircraft Maintenance Manual
Where can you find the specifications for the type of fluid used to service an aircraft landing gear?
On the nameplate of the strut.
How much oil should be put into an oleo shock strut?
With the strut completely deflated, fill to the filler plug
What is meant by the ply rating of a tire?
Number of plies in a cotton fabric needed to produce the same strength of plies in the tire.
What is the function of the bead in a tire?
Provides the strength and stiffness where the tire mounts on the wheel.
Is it proper to use a tube in a tubeless tire?
No the inner liner can chafe the tube.
What is the function of the grooves cut into the tread of a tire?
Produces optimum traction with the runway surface.
What is the most widely used tread pattern for a modern airplane tires?
Series of straight grooves around the tire.
