Landforms Of Fluvio-glacial Deposition Flashcards
Description/formation Kame
Undulating mound of fluvio-glacial sand and gravel deposited on The Valley floor near glacier snout
Meltwater streams emerge onto the outwash plain or lake at glacier snout causing velocity to fall and material deposited
Description/formation kame terrace
A flat linear deposit of Flávio-glacial sand/gravel along valley sides
Summer increase in meltwater causing streams which deposit sediment. When glacier retreats the debris at a consistent rate and forms a ridge
Description/formation esker
A long narrow meandering ridge of fluvio-glacial sand/gravel
Subglacial streams carrying large amounts of rock debris due to high pressure inside tunnels with the streams meandering beneath. When glacier retreats the debris load is deposited at a consistent rate and forms a ridge
Description/formation sandur (outwash plain)
A flat expanse off fluvio-glacial debris in front of glacial snout
Meltwater streams emerge from glacier and enter lowland areas and gradually lose their energy depositing debris. Coarse gravel is deposited first near glacier and finer sediment deposited further away
Description/formation Kettle hole
A circular depression often forming a lake in an outwash plain
When glacier retreats detached blocks of ice remain on the outwash plain. Meltwater streams flow over ice covering them in deposits. Eventually the ice melts and forms a depression which often fills with meltwater
Description/formation Proglacial lake
A lake formed in front of the glacier snout
Formed by damming action of a moraine during retreat of a glacier. The hills block the escape of meltwater it creates a lake
Description/formation meltwater channel
A narrow channel cut into bedrock/deposits either underneath or along the front of an ice margin
Meltwater erodes deep channels and gorges as a result of high hydrostatic pressure within the glacier. They are able to flow uphill and are often larger than lost glacial stream. Often braided streams due to variation in discharge
