landforms Flashcards
flood plains
the flat land next to a river which is liable to flood when the river rises after a rainfall event
levees
when a river floods, friction with the floodplain leaves to a rapid decrease in the velocity of the river and therefore its capacity to transport material
thickest coarsest material is deposited first on the channel edges then thinner and finer is transported to the outer parts
after many floods levees build up.
deltas
lower course
when the river meets a still water, the loss of water leads to a loss of energy and the river deposited its material
flocculation of clay particles occurs causing them to clump together and deposit material
deposition causes the main channel to be blocked splitting the channel into distributaries.
delta grows outwards to sea with continued deposition
bluffs
where the meander reaches the edge of a floodplain- found at the sides of floodplains
