Landforms #1 Flashcards
Defenition~Word
Mountain Range
a line of mountains connected by high ground
Glacier
a large, slow-moving mass of ice that originates on a mountain and flows down its slope under the force of gravity
Valley
a low area of land between hills or mountains, typically with a river or stream flowing through it.
Lake
a large body of water surrounded by land.
Plateau
A “mountain with the top cut off”
Mountain
a large natural elevation of the earth’s surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level; a large steep hill.
Tributary
a stream or river that flows into a larger body of water, such as a lake or river
Delta
a triangular-shaped landform that forms where a river empties into a body of water, such as an ocean, sea, lake, or reservoir
Mouth
the point where the river flows into a larger body of water, such as a lake, ocean, or sea
River
a large natural stream of water flowing in a channel to the sea, a lake, or another such stream.
Volcano
a mountain or hill, typically conical, having a crater or vent through which lava, rock fragments, hot vapor, and gas are being or have been erupted from the earth’s crust.
Hills
a naturally raised area of land, not as high or craggy as a mountain
Bay
a broad inlet of the sea where the land curves inward
Desert
a region of land that receives very little precipitation, usually less than 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain per year, resulting in a dry, arid environment with sparse vegetation and often extreme temperature fluctuations
Oasis
a fertile spot in a desert, where water is found
Swamp
an area of low-lying, uncultivated ground where water collects; a bog or marsh
Channel
a length of water wider than a strait, joining two larger areas of water, especially two seas.
Gulf
a deep inlet of the sea almost surrounded by land, with a narrow mouth
Cave
a large underground chamber, typically of natural origin, in a hillside or cliff.
Cove
a small sheltered bay
Cape
a narrow, elevated piece of land that extends out into a body of water, like an ocean or lake, essentially a headland or promontory that marks a distinct change in the coastline
Isthmus
a narrow strip of land that connects two larger landmasses, essentially acting as a land bridge between two bodies of water
Strait
a narrow waterway that connects two larger bodies of water, like seas or oceans
Canal
a man-made waterway constructed to connect two bodies of water, allowing boats and ships to travel across land, often used for transportation, irrigation, and flood control
Harbor
a sheltered body of water that allows ships to safely anchor, moor, or move around
Field
an area of open land, especially one planted with crops or pasture, typically bounded by hedges or fences.
Plain
